SUMMARY:Hardy Plant Society\, Hampshire Group – Climbers – Speaker Pip Bensley
DESCRIPTION:Many may know Pip for her skills as a flower arranger as she is now a NAFAS accredited judge\, picking up 3 RHS Chelsea Gold Medals individually and been involved with a further 23 Gold Medal winning exhibits as part of the Hillier Nurseries Staging Team. It is however her interest in Climbers that she is coming to talk to us today. \nAfter  a year in college\, working in a Cornish nursery\, landscape architect for 3 years\, next an independent nursery near Newbury\, followed by local specialist nursery Hilliers. Over 27 years she worked her way up to become the Plant Buyer for the group of centres. At this time she wrote her book “Hillier Gardeners’ Guide to Climbers and Wall Plants” and hence the topic of our talk in March. During this period with Hilliers\, she worked on a Christmas Flower arranging demonstration with Andy McIndoe\, and so began her love of cut flowers. \nShe is also a regular expert on BBC Radio Solent’s Garden Question Time as well as being part of the Garden Team BBC Radio Surry & Sussex! So\, she is an extremely knowledgeable and welcoming guest speaker. We hope you can come along.

SUMMARY:Hardy Plant Society\, Hampshire Group – The Origins of Camellia x williamsii – Speaker Charles Williams VMH
DESCRIPTION:We are privileged to welcome Charles Williams VMH to present one of his lectures\, in the Hall\, regarding the topic that his family are so famously known for – Camellias. His great grandfather bred the original x williamsii strain of camellias in the 1920s and Charles continues his work by putting forward new magnolias\, rhododendrons and camellias for registration and awards. \nHe owns and runs the Caerhays Castle Gardens and Estate\, as well as being the senior partner of Burncoose Nurseries\, in Cornwall. Charles is a member of the RHS Rhododendron and Camellia sub committee and holder of the coveted RHS Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH). \nHe will be bringing a vanload of camellias for sale\, but I am sure if you order something from Burncoose\, he may be able to bring it along with him when he comes. They are also famous for their wide range of magnolias. \nWe also hope to be joined by our very own VMH recipient – our President Roy Lancaster!

DESCRIPTION:Grayshott Gardeners is delighted to welcome Jonathan Newell this month.  Jonathan is an RHS Public Engagement Officer\, based at Wisley.  He organises Hilltop Live and sources internal and external speakers to give engaging seasonal talks to visitors.  He also leads tree walks with RHS volunteers twice a month\, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm to make them more confident guides.  When not doing all of that Jonathan runs a YouTube channel called EcoGeeko\, where he talks about trees.  Do come along and join us to hear all about it.

His first career was photography in the film and music industries . After Sparsholt he progressed to being the General Manager of a busy Landscaping and Amenity horticulture business\, working and winning awards in the south with the well known names in the business.  When he was at Sparsholt he bred jellyfish and piranhas.
