SUMMARY:The Legacy of Hadspen\, to the Newt in Somerset\, by Harry Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:Grayshott Gardeners is delighted to welcome Harry Baldwin as our speaker this month. Harry is Head Gardener at the Newt in Somerset\, having previously worked at Borde Hill and The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew where he received a 2015 – 2018 Diploma in Botanical Horticulture. The Newt\, a luxury hotel/spa and garden experience has been developed on the estate at Hadspen House. Hadspen House was made famous by its extensive and beautiful gardens\, developed in the 20th century by owner and garden designer Penelope Hobhouse and later the horticulturalists Nori and Sandra Pope. Harry is here to tell us more about the transition.

DESCRIPTION:Jack has been described as a rising star in British horticulture and is renowned for his exceptional knowledge of woody plants and his significant contributions to plant conservation\, research\, and education. \nIn fact\, he is the current holder of the 2025 RHS ROY LANCASTER AWARD in recognition of his outstanding contribution to horticulture. Having been interested in plants from a young age\, upon leaving school Jack applied for the prestigious Wisley Diploma course\, from which he graduated in 2022 before being taken on full-time. He later managed Oakwood at the same location\, demonstrating a level of expertise that sets him apart from many of his peers. His commitment to the propagation and conservation of rare and significant plants\, alongside his efforts to improve plant labelling and collection accuracy\, showcases his dedication. Jack’s work marks him as an exceptional young horticulturist and a leader of the next generation in the field.

A special emphasis on reducing the amount of water used in the garden is particularly relevant with threats of water bans and climate change\, although in the past few years water has been abundant! \nMarina will bring plants and sundries for sale as well.
