SUMMARY:Hardy Plant Society\, Hampshire Group – Going Higher and Higher – Speaker Jack Willgoss from Wildegoose Nursery
DESCRIPTION:Jack and Laura started the nursery as specialist growers of hardy perennial violas\, but their passion for plants has always extended beyond this to encompass a wide range of flowering perennials and grasses. They offer an ever expanding plant list of exciting new perennial introductions and longstanding favourites. The garden at Wildegoose Nursery showcases these wonderful plants in exuberantly planted borders. The garden also functions as stock beds from which they propagate. It is also where they continually test the garden worthiness of the plants they sell. In fact 95% of all their stock is propagated on site from seed\, cuttings and divisions. Talking of which\, they plan to bring along plants to sell. \nThe subject is about using tall perennials to create an immersive atmosphere. They consider using some of the favourite border giants and look at a different take on how to use them. \nHHPS

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Marina\, from Phoenix Perennial Plant Nursery\, to talk to us about the Aplaceae family\, or as we know them “umbellifers”. She studied Botany\, Marine Biology and Ecology\, followed by 3 years doing a postgraduate research\, before escaping the laboratory and getting outside to begin her new life as a nurseryman in 1984. She founded her own nursery in 2002 and is a major advocate for providing a balanced ecosystem to promote beneficial wildlife. Whilst she has won RHS medals in her own right\, she is well known for supplying the very best top garden designers with unusual plants\, for their award winning gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show and others. \nWith her table full of goodies\, she will use plant material to highlight the delights of umbels. As usual\, she will be bringing along some of her own plants so a wonderful opportunity to come along and see a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. \nHHPS

DESCRIPTION:Barry is a passionate horticulturalist and botanist\, and has been interested and involved in collecting and conserving plants for over 20 years. He started with a small nursery on the Isle of Wight and then joined the Hillier Gardens\, where he is now the botanist and plant records officer. \nAway from work he manages 5 National Plant Collections (4 will be on display at the meeting) of his own and has been a collection holder and Plant Heritage member since 2004. His plants are grown within his garden at home and a small woodland close by. He has promised to bring some Plants for Sale too. \n  \nHHPS

SUMMARY:Hardy Plant Society\, Hampshire Group – Climbers – Speaker Pip Bensley
DESCRIPTION:Many may know Pip for her skills as a flower arranger as she is now a NAFAS accredited judge\, picking up 3 RHS Chelsea Gold Medals individually and been involved with a further 23 Gold Medal winning exhibits as part of the Hillier Nurseries Staging Team. It is however her interest in Climbers that she is coming to talk to us today. \nAfter  a year in college\, working in a Cornish nursery\, landscape architect for 3 years\, next an independent nursery near Newbury\, followed by local specialist nursery Hilliers. Over 27 years she worked her way up to become the Plant Buyer for the group of centres. At this time she wrote her book “Hillier Gardeners’ Guide to Climbers and Wall Plants” and hence the topic of our talk in March. During this period with Hilliers\, she worked on a Christmas Flower arranging demonstration with Andy McIndoe\, and so began her love of cut flowers. \nShe is also a regular expert on BBC Radio Solent’s Garden Question Time as well as being part of the Garden Team BBC Radio Surry & Sussex! So\, she is an extremely knowledgeable and welcoming guest speaker. We hope you can come along. \nHHPS

SUMMARY:Hardy Plant Society\, Hampshire Group – The Origins of Camellia x williamsii – Speaker Charles Williams VMH
DESCRIPTION:We are privileged to welcome Charles Williams VMH to present one of his lectures\, in the Hall\, regarding the topic that his family are so famously known for – Camellias. His great grandfather bred the original x williamsii strain of camellias in the 1920s and Charles continues his work by putting forward new magnolias\, rhododendrons and camellias for registration and awards. \nHe owns and runs the Caerhays Castle Gardens and Estate\, as well as being the senior partner of Burncoose Nurseries\, in Cornwall. Charles is a member of the RHS Rhododendron and Camellia sub committee and holder of the coveted RHS Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH). \nHe will be bringing a vanload of camellias for sale\, but I am sure if you order something from Burncoose\, he may be able to bring it along with him when he comes. They are also famous for their wide range of magnolias. \nWe also hope to be joined by our very own VMH recipient – our President Roy Lancaster! \nHHPS
